What Remains: Memory and Forgetting in Art
Memories shape our lives. Yet memory is not a static archive that is simply preserved. It is selective, fluid and emotional. It changes with the perspectives of those who recount it, and with the social contexts in which history is negotiated. The exhibition explores this process and shows how artists capture, process, question or overwrite memory. In doing so, they navigate between personal and collective experiences, between the past and the present, and between preservation and forgetting.
With What Remains: Remembering and Forgetting in Art, the Städtische Wessenberg-Galerie invites visitors to understand memory as an active process – in storytelling, in omission, in interpretation and in artistic expression. It focuses on what remains and on what disappears.
On display are works from the 20th and 21st centuries that open up a polyphonic dialogue between the past and the present
