DIE FREIHEIT DER FORM

ART WORKS FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE LANDRATSAMT ALB-DONAU-KREIS

About 30 years ago, the Landratsamt Alb-Donau-Kreis began to show art exhibitions in the Haus des Landkreises in Ulm and has continuously expanded its already existing, small in-house collection of artworks since then. Today, the art collection of the Landratsamt comprises around 600 works by over 190 artists, primarily from southern Germany – including outstanding works by key figures of classical modernism such as Adolf Hölzel, Oskar Schlemmer, Willi Baumeister and Max Ackermann, as well as important protagonists of contemporary art. The former Landrat Dr. Wolfgang Schürle has been a driving force behind building up this impressivehas collection.
An exhibition in his honor now presents a selection of central positions of the collection and illustrates how a variety of forms of representation and styles has developed in southern Germany over the last 100 years, which have become more and more differentiated up to the present.
This exhibition “Freiheit der Form” (freedom of form) exemplifies how artists – starting with the invention of photography and accelerated by the traumatic experiences of the First and Second World Wars – increasingly broke away from the realistic image and produced representations that use color and form with new freedom.
